Halloween In Oak Park
Inspired by a fond memory of one of my favorite holidays!
I love Science Fiction and Fantasy, and have included a lot of costumes that I hope you will have fun identifying. Also, one person is not in costume, and he is very confused at finding himself in such a strange place and time!

Checking It Twice
My take of the legend of St. Nicholas.
Drawn in colored pencil on Canson paper, I imbued as much Victorian Charm into this scene as I could. Whenever possible, I used actual items, like books, toys and Christmas trees as subject matter. St. Nicholas, a bishop during his lifetime, is sitting in an antique bishop's chair. St. Nicholas knows all children are beloved of God and has studied all faiths, cultures, and religions, as shown by objects and books on theshelves. The cats are mostly based on my own pets.

Don't Play with DragonsThis young wizard really should have read the teacher's instructions more carefully! Oil on canvas. As with many of my fantasy still-lifes, the majority of the image was painted from life, with fantasy elements added. I actually burnt cork in order to get the right look for the burnt bulletin board.
I never made any reproductions of this piece. If anyone is interested in limited edition prints or cards, let me know. If there's enough interest, I may make some.

Shelf Of WonderThe third of my Bookshelf series, Oil on wood board. With the help of friends, I gathered these books and toys and bookshelf together and painted it from life. Many of these classic childrens/young adult books I enjoyed reading and they have an endearing quality for children to continue to enjoy!

Shelf of FantasyThis was the first of my bookshelf series. Oil on board, I painted almost everything from life, and then added the fantasy elements. Like the others, it was made life-size to give the allusion of an actual bookshelf set into the wall!

Some Like 'em HotOil on canvas, the peppers were painted from life, and dragons put in later. Was inspired when I discovered there are even purple peppers! Some of the pepper varieties were quite hot and I handled them with gloves on, then gave the hot ones away to someone who likes steam coming out of their ears!

Oriental DelightOil on canvas. This time, I used vegetables and cookies with an Asian theme. Painted from life, then the Chinese dragon was added in. (I used a gold necklace with scale-like texture to place-hold for realism in lighting and reflections)

Unseen MagiI have often combined the Spiritual with Fantasy. I could not help thinking that if these creatures really existed, they are God's creations too, and represtentatives would find a way to honor the Christ child.

Self Portrait with CatsI've always loved trompe l'oeil and cut the masonite for this painting to the shape to add to the illusion of reality. Filled with many of my favorite things, most elements were painted from life. I added in my two of my cats to provide the fantasy elements. Look closely, they are interdimentional!
